Our Story

How our story started depends on who you ask… if you ask Dianne, David “found her on Instagram” after a brief introduction via mutual friends and that’s how we connected. If you ask David, Dianne was “stalking him on social media” (aka liking two photos). Either way, if it wasn’t for Instagram, you wouldn’t be getting an invitation to this wedding.

Anyway, after opening a dialog, we both casually agreed to a first date at Jade Bar, a place we still frequently visit, often with many of our good friends and family. For this first meeting, we agreed to meet at an early hour during the week, so we both could respectively “bolt” if it didn’t go well (neither of us had particularly high expectations for the encounter). However, one thing is for certain, once we started talking there was an instant connection, and we were certainly drawn to one another. Our “couple of drinks” turned into hours of conversation and a late dinner too. David will say that “in some strange way, Dianne made the world quiet”. Dianne will say, “he really wasn’t as bad as I thought”.

Well, that was almost 7 years ago! The years since then have been filled with ups and downs. The uninterrupted years that we have been together have brought us through some challenging experiences, including the whole world historically shutting down, but also many great times with family and friends in different places and settings, which have given us years of special shared memories.

David officially proposed to Dianne in Sedona in 2023, shortly after an amazing vacation in Greece, which was supposed to be the setting for the actual proposal… but that didn’t go according to plan (a story longer than can be told in this paragraph but which notably included David being spectacularly stressed out by having to keep the secret while his plan was met with obstacle after obstacle but which was temporarily alleviated by a series of stiff drinks on a beach in Mykonos, courtesy of Marcus Dell’Artino, one of our dear friends who became the third person on Earth to be let in on the secret). David’s weeks-long-proposal-delay-stress wasn’t helped much by Mike (Dianne’s Dad) who later revealed that he had considered withdrawing the blessing he had given David over a smoker grill in Phoenix, weeks before, based on “the actual proposal exceeding statute of limitations”.

Anyway, Dianne grew up in a small town in New Mexico and David grew up in a coastal town in South Africa. We both went to college in different cities, we work in very different fields, and neither of us does what we went to school for. Along the way we've both made great friends, many of whom live in different places across the world, This also means that even though we’ve been together for years, there are still special people and family from our respective lives that the other is yet to meet.

Besides, finally getting married, which meant that both of Dianne’s brothers beat her to getting married (as Dianne occasionally reminds David), the “other motivation” for this wedding is to create an opportunity for the people that are special to us, some that we just don’t get to see enough, to get together to spend time together in a pretty place. Life just doesn’t offer that many of these opportunities and just compiling a list of wedding invitations reminded us both how grateful we are for the people in our lives.

If you have received an invitation, you are someone that is special to one or both of us. If you can’t be there, that will not change. If you can make it, you count on us probably telling you one or more times, after one or more drinks, how much we love you!
